Introduction to Special Needs Education


Course Overview

This course covers basic theoretical and conceptual context regarding issues surrounding persons with disabilities. It also addresses developmental, psychological, social and learning characteristics across the different disability groups. Special emphasis will be given to how individuals with special needs (those with disabilities and impairments as well as gifted) would be able to develop and maximize their talents and capabilities through educational and environmental changes.


At the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Define special needs education and other related terms
  • Identify individuals who demand special needs education
  • Identify the nature and characteristics of various areas of exceptionalities
  • Explain the causes of different kinds of exceptionalities
  • Apply appropriate educational intervention strategies to help students with special needs
  • Develop a positive attitude towards students with special education needs
